Anyone ever heard of Luciocyprinus strigatus?

Go ahead and google that one, but you won't get very far. We all have heard of the Arapaima, Nile Perch, Goonch, Mahseer, Wells Catfish, Siamese Carp, Mekong Catfish, Taimen and many others made famous by various fishing/adventure type shows. Most of these found in exotic locations that we all dream about fishing for one day. But were any of you aware of another freshwater giant that none of these shows or "experts" have ever mentioned before? Maybe it's because this jewel is tucked away in a hidden land and in a hard to get to place.

While living in Laos for 2 years, I came across the first picture of this species. I fished Nam Ngum Dam often but there is another Dam built hidden in the mountains of Laos. It's called Nam Ngum 2. The river that feeds it is where this species lives. These pictures I have received from friends in Laos. I gotta get back to Laos again. It would be nice to catch a big one before they get exploited.

Your guess is as good as mine

Your guess is as good as mine Eric. I'm only guessing but I would say that's a river fish that existed in the river long before the reservoir existed. Not sure how it has adapted to slower currents. From the picture, it appears to be river-like habitat if that is where they were caught.

I think they are in the upper end of the reservoir.

Looks like one hell of a chub to me :)

Maybe they'll escape attention because they look so much like the despised trash fish of North America.....Maybe.

Wolf Carp, you say

Well, of course no one will find it if you give the wrong name blush but I certainly want to know more about Wolf Carp & I know how to dig... I took your word regarding obscurity; skipped Google, Wiki, etc. & went straight to FishBase & RedList -- I'm guessing you mean striolatus for the species:

mighty scant info, indeed. the FishBase photos are especially crappy -- you may want to do them a favor & upload your awesome pics:

P.E.T.A. sucks!!! Plants are living things, too -- they're just easier to catch!

BTW, Cyprinids are not despised anywhere, outside N. America -- in Asia, they're highly valued as both, food & sport

IMO exposure to Western C&R anglers and their valuta, may go a long way to keep these beautiful brutes from disapearing like the Yangtze dolphin & giant paddlefish.

Absolutely stunning!
Great verification, Philaroman - would love to know the natural/zoological history of this hidden gem! And of course we all hope they're adequately protected by whatever means possible. Why I ultimately joined this site - to learn about and vicariously experience so many truly awesome fish species of all kinds in all waters, world wide, and share the fascination and appreciation with like minded folks Thanks a ton for posting this, C&B, and being willing to share info about this fantastic species!

Very neat looking fish. Looks fast, too. Drag smoker.

Secret key to catching is to don army fatigues with turquoise scarf and baseball cap.
