ID Help - Small Sunfish
Hey guys, Curious if anyone can help me ID this small sunfish that I caught this morning. I've caught bluegill, redear, redspotted, warmouth & dollar sunfish at this particular site. Bantam have also been caught there. At this point, I've convinced and unconvinced myself of three different IDs, and decided it was time to defer to the experts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's a link to the pic: https://fatfingeredflytyer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/img_2002.jpg Thanks Chris

Hmmm

I'm personally leaning towards bantam sunfish for your fish here. Gosh could be a lil warmouth too.... bantams have a protruding lower jaw, harder to tell when their mouth is open. One thing is for sure that is a very beautful little fish!

Ya just Can't catch um from the couch.

Maybe a Bantam-Warmouth hybrid?

Thanks for the input, Goldenfishberg!

Unfortunately, I was foolish and only took once quick picture of this fish before releasing.  I think a few more pics with the mouth closed and at slightly better angles would have made this a bit easier to ID.

As for your suggestions, a combination of the two species (Bantam-Warmouth hybrid) has come up numerous times as a possible ID.  Here's one of the arguments I received in favor of the hybrid:

"I'm in line with Jason's hunch of bantam x warmouth. Really it has a lot of bantam features, and almost looks like a male in breeding colors except that body shape is just not right. It appears to have a bunch of those dark spots on the body like bantam get (though some may be fluke eggs covered in cysts.) Lateral line does almost appear complete, maybe one break."

For the time being, I'm assuming that to be as close to an ID as I'll get.  Now, I just need to find time to get back to the same spot and find one I can prove out as a Bantam.

Thanks again

Chris
