ID help please
<p>I was out on a lake today and found the following critter on the bottom. The rare and elusive Floridian Moose gave me his best guess over some info I gave him without some pictures and he is thinking either Iowa or Johnny darter. Thanks for the help ahead of time teaching a micro padawan learner.</p> <p>heres 2 lateral shots:</p> <p><img alt="" src="http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/xx286/haveknight2omega/mysterydarter02.jpg" /></p> <p><img alt="" src="http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/xx286/haveknight2omega/mysterydarter01.jpg" /></p> <p>and one where it was just hanging around after release, its in the very center of the photo</p> <p><img alt="" src="http://i764.photobucket.com/albums/xx286/haveknight2omega/mysterydarter03.jpg" /></p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Given Moose's two suggestions

Given Moose's two suggestions and my limited skill in darter ID'ing, I'd say it looks more like an Iowa than a Johnny.

  • Doesn't have distinct X's and W's on the side as a Johnny should; looks more like the dark mottling of an Iowa.
  • Dorsal fin appears to have the bluish edge and base, and middle red band of an Iowa.

Thanks guys

I'm going to say Iowa at this point as well. Reekfish I didn't know about the "X" and "W" pattern with johnnys so I'll need to keep that in mind. Moose thanks for the premptive strike on the ID and the confirmation.

Life list Iowa Darter!
