Crystal Darter

I'm not a micro angler by any stretch but this (accidental) catch was too cool to not share. I was fishing a 2.5-3' deep swift gravel run with Hengelaar and this guy grabbed my crawler chunk and #8 circle on pyramid sinker. Total fluke.

I had a slight idea what I had caught but I knew it would be impossible to have caught a Crystal Darter... I described it to Corey and he suggested it might be a Crystal Darter... I knew it looked too cool to not be something interesting, too bad the silvery, iridescent, translucent purple/green/blue didn't photo - nice sized micro fish in the 6" class. The saddles didn't photograph well either.

Super cool to get an impossibly rare species by total chance. I've eliminated all other possiblities in western WI so I'm 90%+ sure (feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong)

Nice catch Tony! Crystal

Nice catch Tony! Crystal Darter for sure.

Crystal Fudging Darter.

Congrats on the confirmation.

What a cool fishie that was. Indeed the crystally, translucent irridescence doesn't come across in the photos as it was in real life, but it still looks cool as all get-out. And its true splendor remains etched in our minds.

If only that something that doubled over your rod in that same gravelly run at dusk had showed itself...

And if only my fumbling self hadn't busted off that awesome River...

Still a sweet day!

Fishn sure is neat

Yes, that is a Crystal Darter

Yes, that is a Crystal Darter. I confirmed it with John Lyons.

That is a very cool catch Tony.

That is the biggest and best

That is the biggest and best looking darter I've seen, amazing catch.

We would probably see more

We would probably see more catches like this if we would target more non-traditional water (i.e. fast water chutes or swift runs) like that.

probably. Lyons still

probably. Lyons still commented that finding a Crystal in the best water while targeting them was like finding a needle in a haystack. But Hengelaar hooked a nice River Redhorse in the same type of water in the same river and they are terribly common in that river either.

It is interesting how many common species you still find in odd water - in fast water particularily Shortheads and Channel Cats.

AMAZING catch. That is definitely not a logperch! Crystal darters are one of the rarest fish around. They are very difficult to catch even with nets and shockers. Really cool that you caught one on hook and line.
