Be careful on the ice...

Hopefully now people will

Hopefully now people will accept that the channel ice just isn't going to happen this year. Sad stuff to be sure.

If this keeps people off for

If this keeps people off for 2-3 weeks I think we might done with people going through that ice.  Get well into March and the island ice will blow out to sea on the first major gale.  It isn't strong enough to stay put.  Far as I'm concerned that shelf can snap off right at the mouth of the bay and blow out tomorrow.  I'd like to get another month of bay ice, which is reasonable - but the island ice just isn't  going to happen this year.

A mile and a half from where

A mile and a half from where the famous guide went in? Really? They should of known better. I have never nor will ever take anything more than myself and a sled onto the ice, just isn't worth it.

The thing is these people

The thing is these people assume it cant happen to you and still do the dumbest stuff ever.

Two years ago we had 12 trucks go through in one spot within a few hours of each other.
First dude went through and the guy behind him decided "hmmm must be a weak spot there" and went 50 feet to the right of him, kerplonk! Then the next guy  "hmmm must be a weak spot there" and did the same thing, this happened for 2 hours until they were all in the drink.

This year we had one guy go in and drown and while rescue was attempting to find him under the ice another car went through 20 yds away.

Like Tony, what I have seen this year BLOWS my mind.
Out in Green bay we saw people driving within feet of an active bubbeling spring that was OPEN. people driving out on a slush crust with the idea of "Build up speed and you will be fine"
Running over eggs faster still brakes eggs, why they think it works in their cars is confusing to me.

AND get this, yesterday I heard about a group of snowmobilers who hit a shanty town, literaly 4 snowmobiles in a group all crashed into a massive group of shantys. Broad daylight and no fog.
????
How?

wow, those stories are nuts -

wow, those stories are nuts - 12 trucks in a couple hours? snowmachines hitting a shanty town... wonder if alcohol was a factor...

Josh you should see what they are driving on at Volks if you think Lipski's is bad...

As for taking machines/trucks onto the ice, I've done it (rarely).  Freaks me out.  We drove on 24"-30" high quality of ice once this winter.  That's double the recommended minimum and it still freaked me out.

This is from last year

A total of 36 cars went through in one spot during a fishing tourny.
They all parked right next to each other next to a pressure crack.

And this jem a buddy took.

The crack was active and moving yet people were still using the ice bridge.
they put bridges out over the pressure cracks, the bridges are designed to expand and contract with the ice.

That was going to be my

That was going to be my second guess.  I've never fished 'bago though, so I wasn't sure if it was just as bad for goofy ice and bad judgement.

Oddly I have yet to see anyone driving a truck anywhere stupid on Superior, plenty of bad judgement with snowmachines to make up for it though...

Very surprising what people

Very surprising what people were diving on at Volks.  Frankly I wouldn't be crazy about being near some of the perch cites much less taking a vehicle out there.

Four sleds hit a shanty town.  ARE YOU SERIOUS! I mean for the sake of pete, how did all four hit a god damn town! We've all seen them. They aren't hard to spot!

Unless it was a supper secret shanty town covered by a stealth shield.

I am sure adult beverages

I am sure adult beverages were to blame.
On the lake you have two types of people. Fishermen and cruisers. They hate each other and the cruisers will buzz by you on the lake high speed. I am betting they were planning on cruising through the shanty town at speed, but then misjudged something. Oddly enough nobody was hurt, but a few sleds and shantys were wrecked.

They actually will aim for peoples tip ups out here. so you never set a tip up too far from where yo are fishing.  I saw one sled this winter that was painted oliv drab with a sharks mouth and had about 5 little tipups painted on the side like kill shots. Stupid, but I have to say that "Aces" sled was pretty cool looking. If I ever get one Ill be painting it like a flying tiger.

Im pretty sure they are the same guys that buzz me in my kayak when they are in jetskis.
We had that guy who drove over a flock of sleeping ducks a few winters back. and the guys who ran down deer.
Its not a MENSA convention out here thats for sure.

The coolest thing I ever saw on the lake here was two years ago.
I hiked way out to a reef about 3 miles out and was jigging for perch and sauger. there was one dude out there by himself. He looked up and said "Man you took the hard way out" We chatted for a bit and I noticed his gear was all packed up. A few minutes later I hear a radio go off in his bag and he pulled it out and started talking.
He said "My wife got into a nice school of perch, so she is coming to pick me up" About 3 minitues later I hear an engine and right over the pressure crack comes a small Cessna with skis. The dude started waving it down and it circled not more then 50' over the ice. The guy said "My rides here" with a big grin. His wife set the plane down and motored over, he hopped in and they both waved and off they went.

The guy and his wife knew they were likley the coolest couple in the state.

Those guys gunning for tip

Those guys gunning for tip ups are reason I often stick a spud bar in the ice next to mine....

There is a small river, maybe 50 yards across, with a Burbot run up here where a buddy of mine was burbot jigging.  This same sled buzzed him multiple times at high speed, close enough that it ran between him and his buddy and the snow that kicked up hit him.  After a couple rounds of this he launched a spud bar at the sled... not that I'd condone that behavior or anything...

(there are reasons why I carry a spud at all virtually times, even on really thick ice - such a handy tool)

And the term "The Spud bar

And the term "The Spud bar salute" is born!

I would stick a nice bright

I would stick a nice bright tipup out there and cut a 3'x3' ice well right in front of it, fill it with slush, sit back and enjoy the show. Ofcourse my ultimate goal would be to nail the idiot with the tipups painted on his machine.

...then I could airbrush little snowmobiles on the side of my tipup

Unbelievable.  Natural

Unbelievable.  Natural selection.  Maybe, just maybe eventually people like that will cease to....nevermind.

Just your run of the mill Orvis Boy.  Fly fishing elitist.  I cannot hear you over my false casting.  All guided trips every day.

Fishing for compliments since 88.

One of my favorites...

I often walk onto and fish lakes in the early season that have not yet seen any other traffic. It happens every season, that a group of snowmobilers going by along shore will see me out there by myself, and then drive up to me and park, to ask "how thick is the ice?".
