Rules for the 2020 Contest

Friends, we are living in strange times. I know that you all, like me, have been hard-pressed to survive and thrive while the law and rules of our new situation take hold. The pandemic has made it impossible to travel for fishing across state lines - and closed resorts, campgrounds, and fishing accesses, make things difficult for travellers all across the nation.

But the 2020 Roughfish.com fishing contest cannot be denied. There are buttons on sale, and the contest WILL GO ON.

No, we cannot travel all throughout the nation catching fish as we have before. That would be impossible.

But we at roughfish.com have devised a new challenge for all of us to undertake. A ten-week challenge. The esteemed members of the Carpsucker Underground have created a list of ten challenges which will be randomly assigned for the ten weeks from June until Mid-July. On every Sunday Night, a new challenge will be issued, and if you complete the challenge, you will earn ten points toward the final prize. Also, every week will end with an "Angler of the Week" award.

If any of these weekly challenges are completely impossible for you, you can instead complete the "Default Challenge" of catching ten species for that week (or five species for anglers in Canada or Alaska). You can catch the same species if you complete the default challenge twice.

I ask you, as a loyal member of this wonderful community of anglers, to order a button when you register for the contest. Your contribution pays for this site to exist. However, because of the Covid-19 Pandemic, we are allowing anyone to enter and compete free of charge. You can simply print out the contest graphic and compete.

All challenges MUST be completed within 60 miles of your primary residence or where you work or spend a lot of your time.

The first challenge will be announced by me, when May turns to June.

Good luck to all of you in the challenges to come.

Corey

This will be fun

Well stated, brother! I am really looking forward to the challenges that await our Roughfish brethren as we embark on a collective angling quest of awesomeness. I will mention that ASAP folks please register for the contest and Paypal if you want a button delivered by June 1st. It's going to be close and I can't guarantee it but I plan to receive them and ship out on Wednesday 5/27. So register by 5/26 if possible. I will be off the grid for the next few days so will catch up with you later.

Sounds Great!

I'm excited for this tournament, might mix up the playing field big time. Will there be t-shirts this year?

All fish are beautiful.

Definitely a cool twist this

Definitely a cool twist this year guys, can't wait to hear about those weekly challenges. I was hoping for a clarification quick. If lets say I complete Week 1 challenge, I get 10 points. If I instead complete the 'Default Challenge', do I also get 10 points? Also, has the prize changed at all?

Thanks looking forward to this!

Hey Corey,

Hey Corey,

As always, thank you so much for putting this together and for coming up with such a creative solution under these difficult circumstances. My situation is kind of unique this summer, so I may require some extra clarification. I'm currently finishing up my Master's work at Virginia Tech and plan to move back home to Kansas to spend the rest of my summer with family. The move is scheduled for mid-June (lease ends June 16) to make some fishing stops on the way home, especially as we work our way through the wondrous, fishy world that is southern Missouri. So, I have a couple of questions for you Corey and whoever might have knowledge about the current situation in Missouri.

1. As this is planned, essential travel will I be able to count fish for the contest that I catch on my trip home?

2. More importantly, is it even feasible to get a non-resident license in Missouri (and maybe Kentucky) right now?

Sorry to complicate matters for you. Regardless of your rulings, I will be buying a button and competing in any way I am allowed!

Best,

Logan

Hey Logan

The judges and I will mull it over and get back to you. My first insinct is that you should only register challenge entires within 50-60 miles of either VTech or your home in Kansas - otherwise you'd have an unfair advantage against everybody else. But of course the challenges are not necessarily species-based. I'll let you know.

Sounds fun!

Sounds fun!

And thanks for keeping the dream alive Geving bros. I likewise will be unable to leave the NWT this summer. I'm not even certain I can share a boat which will great limit access to certain species but I am planning to get out and catching as many different northern fishes as I can. My goal is to catch 10 species.

Weekly Photo Contests

We'll also run a weekly photo contest too. Best fish, best non-fish. For the best non-fish photo, stories related to the week's challenge will be considered!

Travelling

OK guys, the judges have spoken, if you are travelling for unrelated reasons during the contest, you can change your 60-mile approximate area from one location to another (if you are spending the majority of your time someplace else), but you can't then go ahead and fish every area in between and apply them to the contest. If you are moving from area A through area B, C, and D to area E, you still can only submit fish from a short radius of area A and E. Otherwise we'd just have a normal nationwide contest. You can feel free to have an awesome fishing adventure and post all about it here, but that will not count for the contest - not that it would really help much, considering the new structure. Hope this helps to clarify things!

Hey Corey,

Hey Corey,

Ok. Thanks for the clarification. No problems here, just changes my focus on the way home. Now I can turn my focus to lifers only on my travel home, free from the rigorous multi-species format. Maybe I can finally get the Spotted Gar that's been eluding me for so long and then hustle home to resume the contest.

Can't wait to see the challenges you all cooked up!

Not sure how much fishing I

Not sure how much fishing I will be doing in the next bit as I am moving and even if I am fishing it is all new water. But, I want to support the site. Is there a t-shirt this time too or just the badge?

Is the challenge period each

Is the challenge period each week Sunday midnight to Sunday midnight, or time of challenge dice roll to time of next challenge dice roll?

Redhorse ID cheatsheets, gars, suckers: moxostoma.com

2020: 10 days fishing 11 species 0 lifers. 2019: 34/45/13 2018: 39/40/5

Timing

Until midnight. All the random dice roll does is tell you what the next challenge will be, strating Monday. So if you're hardcore you can be out fishing the last weeks challenge still while thinking about what you;re going to do the next day for the following week.

Sucker Sucker Sucker

Question: Can I check off the "Sucker Sucker Sucker" square with a redhorse? Or, only a fish with "sucker" in the common name?

Second question: Can one fish count for two squares? I assumed that a fish could only be "used" once but didn't see it explicitly forbidden in the bingo rules.

Thanks,

Tyler

Sucker sucker sucker

I clarified the rule here - yes, redhorse suckers will count toward the three suckers. And yes, if you catch a 20-pound madtom it counts both for the "20-pounder" square and for the "madtom" square.

Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. The updated rules seem clear and specific. And the option to hit multiple squares with one catch makes it more interesting.

Not to mention you'll get angler of the week for a 20lb madtoms lol

Speaking of...

Speaking of "Angler of the Week", when will the Anglers of the week be decided/ announced? Or is it already out there and I didn't look in the right place?
