Up until this winter, fake Santa beard has been the ultimate gar fly material. The original recipe was for frayed rope for entanglement, but fake santa beard is so much better that it made rope obsolete. Andy's whole magazine artical about gar espoused rope and santa beard.

Now, that has changed. A new gar fly material has emerged.

Enter the pony. Say hello to my little friend:

Nothing is more tangly and gar-attracting than bright blue, pink, and purple sparkly pony hair.

Andy had to steal this pony from a little girl. Yes, it's that important. Fake Santa beard has caught dozens of Minnesota gar for us, but My Little Pony is now the new fake Santa Beard, This material is not only tangly, but it's brightly colored and curly.

We don't know which Pony this is, but it probably has a name. It's the one with the curly hair. And it's perfect for making gar flies. be on the lookout for this pony, because she's pure gar gold.

Yes! I can work with this here. My kid has lots of these my little pony things. I think a couple might be getting a hair cut for this years gar fly tie.......
I've been collecting broken Barbie dolls with long crazy purple hair, ponies, etc. from my kids for a few years. The gar box on my fly tying/lure making table is a mini Toys-R-Us.

Can't wait for the day that Gar finally become mainstream fishing targets and they stock the shelves of the fishing departments with my little ponies

That would be awesome! Unfortunately that won't happen. If (more likely when) Gar become mainstream, hairline or some other company will buy every my little pony in existance. Then cut off the tails, make packs with enough strands for 3 flies, and sell them for $15...
Damnit. Now I need to go to fleabay and search for curley haired my little ponies...
And lo, unto the earth shall come a plague of shorn ponies and bald Barbies. And they shall roam the land as numerous as the ants, and vengeance shall be their desire. But fear not! For their knees and elbows shall not bend.

It won't be like that. It'll be enough hair for one third of a good-sized Gar fly for $15.
This is awesome, though. I want to see you guys bring in some Longsnouts on MLP hair this summer for sure...
Fishn sure is neat
I'd say enough for 3 "MN sized" Gar Flies. One (at most) Texas sized gar fly. At $15 of fly shop hair I can usually get a Musky fly tied...
but anyway, I'm a purist. I only use Santa Beard. My Little Pony hair... might as well be using dynamite!
totally has nothing to do with being broke cheapskate who already has santa beard... nope... totally too good for MLP...
Badass!
The gods do not subtract the alotted span in men's lives the hours spent in fishing.
Pushing the envelope! You guys got the Right Stuff.
Now to get a NSF grant to fund single-line sampling research into the question.
Mommy, Mommy there’s a strange man in the toy aisle and he’s buying all the My Little Ponies!
I wonder if thrift stores have any old ones laying about?
Goodwill and garage sales will now be approached with a new target in mind.
I have many oddball packets of synthetic fibers that have been "harvested" from things like this in my flytying boxes. Ya just never know
Carpy Diem!
