Jdunfee and myself were conversing earlier today about attending the roundup 2013. Seeing as I've watched 2 come and go without being able to attend and a 3rd one coming with that same uncertainty we concocted a plan, a Roughfish roundup for the "pa chapter" or easterners if you will. It probably won't coincide with the official roundup and as of now it's just whisperings of the idea. Dunfee came up with the idea of a campground near the allegheny river, being from the absolute polar opposite end of the state I'm not familiar, but he is and hopefully he chimes in.
In short, who's interested?
Would people come?
We're uncertain of a location and up for suggestions. Thought we'd throw the idea out and see if there was desire. Being as though its the " first" it may not be as successful as a root river trip, but you have to experiment to make progress! We'll probably put it in a different month of the official roundup in hopes of attending that as well.
We put it in general so more people would see it,
Thanks,
Anthony
I for one would love to fish the Allegheny watershed! Maybe a roundup get together would be the perfect excuse to make it out there finally. I'll bring the flags...
New York if any of you are cool with that?!?
For those unfamilar, the middle Allegheny River is a beautiful, free flowing section. It's a mid sized clean, clear water. Much of it lies in the Allegheny National Forest. It's a very cool enviroment in those parts;featuring canoe liveries, small towns, and general stores on the main routes. In parts of the area there are more cabins and cottages than actual homes.
Common species are:
Smallmouth Bass
Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout
Northern Pike, Muskellunge
White Sucker, Hogsucker, Quillback, Golden, Silver, Smallmouth(or Shorthead), and Black Redhorse.
Yellow Perch, Walleye
Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Bullheads, Flathead Catfish(depending on specific area)
Various Sunfish
Tons of micros.
Other species such as Bowfin, Largemouth Bass, Common Carp aren't uncommon. There are tons more that can be caught with a bit of luck (including River Redhorse, Grass Pickerel, I could go on all day..).
Unfortunately there aren't many campgrounds RIGHT ON the river, but there are quite a few close. So worst comes to worst and it'll be a short drive.
Like Deftik said, that is the top idea so far, but we're certainly up for suggestions to make this work for as many people as possible.
Anyway, all are welcome to attend. It'd be really cool to get some of you midwestern guys out here! We'll keep everyone posted.
I'll probably be out in Pennsylvania at some time this summer for a wedding. No idea when, though.
If you don't make it for the "PA roundup", but still find yourself in western PA, let me know. You've showed me your neck of the woods, would be cool to get out on the water and show you mine.
I guess we're going to be somewhere fairly near Lake Erie, within a couple of hours anyway. It'd be cool to get after a new species.
Erie's about 2-2 1/2 hours from me, depending on where on the lake's small stretch in PA.. Whether you're right around Erie or not you sound like you'll be in range to meet up.
We want at least 10! Somebody RSVP...
It just depends on timing and work demands.
Put me in the maybe pile, depending on the date...
Would be cool to meet a few more of the guys from this here site.
Eli
Anyone in the "maybe" pile, feel free to pitch dates and locations! So far this is just an idea, all we're sure of is we'd like to have a local roundup.
