It is too bad he did not get better macro pics. Out of focus but I do not see a nipple on the lip. I saw this on another sit but he did not post the blury lip pic. Does the DNR have the fish? if so better pics would tell for sure but I think Quill.

It's thawing out right now I guess.  I told them to take more pics once it's unfrozen.

Ever Skeptical...

I'm just wondering how he caught it...

Fishn sure is neat

Thawed out

Pretty clear lower-lip nipple, now that it's thawed out and in focus.

HMMMM....

I'm just wondering how he caught it...

The one thing I could see in his picture was the damage to the Outside of the top lip. To most of the discussion about fair caught foul hooked it looks like a outside lip hook. But then again I am just jealous I have never caught one that big!

Wait I have! (Sight fished)Not much difference size wise either. Unfortunatley it was hot and it was my first carpsucker such an easy catch that I did not get to appreciate it at the time.

Looks like it will be the new record.

Yeah

Before I saw the lip closeup, I was thinking quill as well.  The body shape was just too thick.  Then I found this river in John Lyons' data:

Which really is a mirror image of this fish.

As far as how it was caught - obviously a non-target catch; it's fairly useless to speculate about except that it clearly wasn't shot or speared.

Cool

I know that guy, his name's Nick. Chatted with him about the fish not to long ago. As far as being legit or not, I can assure you he knows what a fair hooked fish is. But it was caught on a jig. Kinda become a "flossed of not" debate. Which would be impossible to conclude.

You should talk to him and get him to send it to Josh. If he is proud of the fish that is all that matters really. I should say that I really am not worried where is was hooked specifically. When he posted it on another site he clearly stated there was a nipple on the mouth so I give him props.

By body shape alone the nipple would be the only way to convince me it was a river and it is indead.

Cool

It's cool you know the guy.  I gotta give him mad props, not just for catching such a cool fish but also for getting the ID right - the last carpsucker record we got turned out to be a misidentified blue sucker.

As far as technique - I think we all know how weird things can happen.  Especially if you're not intentionally trying to catch something!

But Outdoors4Life's lifelister river carpsucker still looks bigger to me ... maybe you should give the guy a run for his money next year?

Length?

Did you guys happen to measure the length? I would love to be able to figure out an approximate wweight by length. I know the WI record Quill is 24 inches.

Hi all ... I'm Nick, the guy
Hi all ... I'm Nick, the guy who caught this RCS.

Aaron - 21-5/8" x 16" and 4# 6 oz on a certified scale FYI.

As speculated, this was an opportunistic catch, as I was actually targeting walleye (shudder). A very odd catch indeed, as I had never caught one prior, and certainly didn't expect to hook into one while walleye fishing. The fish was fair hooked in the mouth, the damage to the upper lip was from me attempting to open his lips for an ID picture, not from a hook. Darn near impossible to open that sucker mouth up with my gorilla fingers lol.

As of current, the fish has been returned to my possession and is in my freezer until the processing is complete, but I do have interest in mounting it. A beautiful fish, and it would be a shame to just toss it away. I rarely keep fish to begin with, and I'd sure hate to see this fish wasted. Likely a once in a lifetime fish for me, especially now that I hear how dificult they are supposed to be to catch. Josh ... Ben was kind enough to share your name with me, and I am very impressed with your work. I have a friend who does taxidermy on the side, and had considered having him help me mount this, but I would be curious to hear from you, as you clearly have lots of experience with these fish! If you could be so kind as to shoot me an email with some info regarding it, I would be much obliged! If it doesn't break my rainy day fund, I may have to ship the fish to WI :) my email is nicholasnutter@gmail.com

Thanks !

Nick congrats!

Nick congrats!

Also thanks for not taking the side offensive from my comment. Also for the dimesions.

Please do have Josh do the mount. He is the only taxi guy I will use. I don't get manymounts but if you checked out his site he has even more works not shown on there that are incredible. Josh has done carpsuckers before too.

It is all perspective!
