In two weeks I could catch 500 redhorse

I can't contain my excitement. In just about two weeks I will be starting seven days on the Namekagon River in Northwestern Wisconsin.

We are taking a break from going to Canada this year, and instead pulling a seven day wilderness camping stint on just about the coolest river ever.

I lost a 23 or 24 inch greater on the Nam last year that snapped my line right as I tried to net it. Having seven full days, I imagine we are going to catch some pretty amazing fish...and as we close in on the St.Croix the last few days of the trip, I hope nothing more than to do some Sturgeon spotting.

Would actually like to eat a redhorse or two this year since we are camping and we want to be as efficient as possible...don't worry, most of the fish eating will be smallies and walleyes hehe, but I would like to try a horse or two but never cooked one, any recipies, tips, etc appreciated.

Horses taste good just bony.

Horses taste good just bony.

Remember that there are protected species in WI such as Greaters and Rivers.

It is all perspective!

I'm jealous.

I'm jealous.

I would much rather eat a redhorse, than a walleye any day.

It doesn't matter what you're fishing for, just as long as you're out there doing it.

on the river 'Horse would be

on the river 'Horse would be fine eating though you'll picking bones - plenty of shortheads and goldens around to be able to spare a few for lunch. At home we make fish cakes out of them and love 'em

Bake on Coals

Bring foil, onions, lemons and olive oil to prepare fish for baking. Gut your catch, wrap in foil, and cook on a thick bed of coals. (Start a big fire in advance.)

When it is done the skin will lift off and the meat will fall off the bone. Eat one side, flip and repeat. Fish baked on coals is an easy boneless way to prepare them while camping. And, if you leave the head on you get to eat the cheek meat!

Tried to raise the Washburn

Tried to raise the Washburn County Fish biologist through email last week (whom I have contacted before) and I couldn't get ahold of him, but I think the email address was bad so I'll make a call on monday to see if I can find a good one. Anyways, as Outdoors4life stated, Rivers and Greaters are protected...so If we catch a potential state recored greater or river it has to go back..Look out 12 pound Silver.... I think no matter what, any giant we caught we would return, but you never know so it is good to be well versed...especially on a trip that could wield such excellent roughfish returns!

I think we are going to camp at Riverside landing Friday August 31st so we are ready to go for our Shuttle September 1st back to the Hayward area to begin our 8 night stint on the river...absolutely cannot wait. Come say hi, or join us!

A few beauties from years past...I know I have posted them before, but hey, where else on the internet can you get respect for redhorse?? A few other scrappies called Smallmouth thrown in there too...
