Killifish Varieties

Went fishing last night (which is when I do most my fishing, I find it easier to sight fish at night then day) and caught my first Speckled Killifish. And when I went to put that info into my life list journal (For my journal I did a lot of research and wrote every species I could find that is found here in the U.S into a hardcover note book divided up by the species by family) but I was filling in the info for my Speckled and I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of Killifish found just in the U.S. alone to include subspecies. So figured why not have a topic showing those multiude of killifish species people have caught. Not closed to just the U.S, I know if there are any Killifish in England then TheHugbot will have caught it.

Oh, I caught this little guy or gal on half of a Mayfly Nymph, put it right infront of his nose.

SPECKLED KILLIFISH

no killifish here

no killifish here unfortunately, but we do have 2 related species called 'toothcarps' in mainland europe, one in spain/portugal and the other in coastal swamps in the med. there are also 2 species of 'valencia' in spain and greece which are related to the toothcarps and killis.

mummichogs

I forgot to mention that there are mummichogs in portugal. I'll catch one of these species one day (hopeully), probably a mediterranean toothcarp but who knows! maybe I'll even get one of the american species...

Killifish

I'm kindof a killifish expert. I've kept over 20 different killifish species in aquariums, some from North America, some from South America or Africa. Most of them I bred through multiple generations in the aquarium. The "Kill-Vissen" are a worldwide family of fish and there are entire societies devoted to killifish appreciation (I'm a member of two). There's only one species of killifish which is tough enough to live in northern Minnesota, but it's one my favourite fishes. I've never tried to catch one on hook and line, because they're just super-cool pets to me.

Wow, Corey!

Wow, Corey! That's neat! Didn't know there was so much killi-love, but I'm glad to hear it. What kind is in Minnesota?
