The Spotted Gar ranges from southern Ontario (where it is rare) to the Gulf of Mexico. This is a short-billed gar, with spots on the head and body. They get to a maximum weight of about 10 pounds. More common in the south, spotted gar are a handful on the end of your line.  Very dark, melanistic specimens of spotted gar seem more common than other gars.
