Shadow Bass, Ambloplites anommus

Closely related to the Rock Bass, the shadow bass is a husky panfish common to streams and rivers in the Ozarks. It also occurs in the southeast US, in a wide area across Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. They like to hide among heavy cover of rocks, brush, and logs, darting out to ambush their preferred prey: small fishes, crayfish, and aquatic and terrestrial insects. Shadow Bass show a distinctive mottled pattern on their sides - with an irregular series of large, dark blotches. This makes it fairly easy to distinguish this fish from the Northern Rock Bass (which has regular lines of black dots) and the Ozark Bass (which has irregularly scattered black speckles). The three generally do not occur in the same area, so you'll nly catch one of them in any given lake or stream.
