Grass Carp White Amur Ali Ayoob

Exotic grass carp are stocked in a variety of waters in the US, and generally cannot reproduce. Wild populations do exist in major river systems, however.  This fish is stocked into golf course ponds and housing development waterways to control aquatic weed growth.  Basically herbivorous, the grass carp presents a unique angling situation where lettuce, peas and banana peels are good bait options.  Flies can sometimes also produce, especially patterns that represent algae clumps.  Also called "White Amur", this species is known for putting up a fantastic battle.

One effective tactic is to chum small pieces of bread in the area you are fishing. Grass carp will eventually start feeding on the floating bread, and a small piece of bread can be floated on the surface without weight in the area. Wait until the grass carp inhales your piece of bread completely, they may bump and nudge it a bit before taking it into their mouth. Check your drag before setting the hook - you'll need it!
