summertime.......

While hiking thru little laugh park last weekend, loaded down with too much gear and sweltering in the 90+ summer sun, I was soooooo jealous of the kids splashin' and playin' in the creek! I got a little of that back today, though. I came home from work and lazed on the deck in the hot sun in my teacher uniform, sluprin' down a big 'ol popsicle, drippin' all over myself like a four-year-old - and it felt sooooo good!

As a kid, I spent most summer days (while in the Cities) barefoot and in my bathing suit from dawn till my dad whistled for us kids to come home for supper, roamin' the creeks to catch frogs, toads, salamanders, crayfish, and anything else I could find, runnin' through every sprinkler in the neighborhood, and chasin' the ice cream truck for Bomb Pops and Drumsticks! I never see kids runnin' through sprinklers anymore, let alone exploring the creeks that are now concrete-lined polluted storm water drains full of all sorts of nastiness, and the last thing being sold from "ice cream trucks" (in my neighborhood anyway) anymore is ice cream (@-@)!

Of course fishing (and camping in the bush) were always required summer activities, but now that school's out (for most kids/teachers) and summer is in full-swing, what were (are) folks favorite summer activities - other than fishing?

p.s. we shoulda had smores at the roundup! :(

OTHER than fishing?? I

OTHER than fishing?? I started a kid's summer fishing camp about 5 years ago so i get to teach about fishing all summer. I dont get to fish much myself since I spend the day baiting hooks, untangling lines, retreiving bobbers from trees, fixing junk reels, pulling kids out of the mud.......Got 40+ kids this year. Starts next week. Cant wait.

That's what it's all about! :)

Great thing to do, Pat! If you have the time, I hope you can help out at the fishing clinic I am organizing through the MN DNR on July 20. I teach ESL students, and yours don't sound too different from mine!

Hi Heidi- bit too far of a

Hi Heidi- bit too far of a drive for me from nj to help out but good luck with your program. My best advice for kid's fishing camp- buy several hundred size 8 long shank gold aberdeen hooks and sit in front of the tv one night and pinch down all the barbs. A couple of jars of gulp maggots, several dozen bobbers and you're good to go. Sunnies will keep the newbies entertained while you present more advanced techniques (bottom fishing, lures, etc) to the kids with more experience. I always have a mix of skill levels in the program so I like to cater to everyone. And patience, lots and lots of patience.

We've been out fishing since Monday. Today was tidal river fish- eels, white perch and white cats. Two kids caught fish that I still need for the contest so they rubbed it in. Thoroughly.

Catch of the day today was a five foot submarine.

Lifer eels all around. Kids were challenging each other to see who could hold onto one longest. Hands were cleaned on the backs of the van seats.
