Usually we get organized and on the river by about noon.  We organize rides up to the put-in with as many boats as possible.

THE BAGMAN COMETH

I've been pretty quiet all winter, but thankfully spring is here and the fishing should pick up for me. Just thought I would let y'all know that I will be there this year, accompaning Jknuth and FrogChaser. Finally got a job that won't screw me out of my planned vacations (and I don't work weekends anymore so no chance of THAT happening again!)

Of course, you know that wherever I go, some creepy knife-wielding lunatic in a black hefty bag and sunglasses seems to follow me around.  If you see him, my best advice is to just give him all your trout and live to fish another day - it's kept me alive this long anyway...

Food

So, what do folks do for food at the roundup? Bring yer own, potluck, a little of both? I am planning on bringing several kinds of cookies and a big pot of chili to share, but other than that, are we on our own for food? I heard from another roughfisher that there are no restaurants/grocery stores close by, so should I plan on supplying enough food for myself for the two days I'm there?

It's technically "bring your

It's technically "bring your own" except for the big "sucker fry" on Saturday.  But my personal experience has been that people will often share food and drinks quite a bit (but that is NOT an invitation for moochers to bum food from everyone).  I know I plan on bringing extra food and drinks to share.  On Saturday afternoon, people will contribute a bunch of dishes to a huge potluck style meal, with sucker patties serving as the main course.  We all contribute the "meat" in the form of our caught fish, to the sucker fry, and it is AWESOME.  Usually, a little bit before the event, Andy or Corey or someone will send out a call for volunteers, asking them to bring stuff for the Saturday meal.  That, at least, has been my experience the past 2 years.

volunteers

Since Andy and Corey have been so encouraging, and offered to volunteer for the ESL fishing clinic I'm organizing on July 20, of course I'd also be happy to help out with any food prep/organization if wanted/needed. It's coming up fast!

We fish, we fish like there

We fish, we fish like there is no tomorrow, we fish like the wind... when we are hungry we eat.
:D

he pretty much had it spot on though.
Saturday is the only real day there is anything orginized and even that just seems to start when it starts. Its after the derby. Although there was some talk of two derbys a main one and a crazy alternative one with some crazy rules like (make your pole, line gear weight..) not sure if this will happen or when.
When suppertime hits people will be cleaning fish and cooking. they pretty much have it down to a science. But I know they always need a hand chopping onions and veggies and cleaning up afterwards.
I plan on Glaxing a Redhorse for people to try.
For food on the otherdays? I normally bring hotdogs for me and my immediate group. If we are lucky enough to get some trout those buggers get fried up for our regular meals.

In all honesty though, its like any other camping trip.
We fish like a mad monkey.
We snack when hungry.
We Kayak.
We drink.
We sit by the campfire, sometimes people will bring an instrument.
We chat by the fire on subjects ranging from Ranges of darters, Biology of buffalos and try to decide why Ben decided to pee on the maple tree and not the ash tree.

Thats pretty much it.

Corey

I'm sorry to say

But my musical frog is missing.... I don't think it was destroyed in the fire, but all of my possesions were removed from my house and I don't think I'll have a way to make music with a frog this year.

Except for dinner on Saturday, all of the food-making is informally organized.  It's a "feed yourself" situation.  Of course, people bring and share food.  Kevin (KPE) makes the most awesome Jerky in the world and he shares it with people all weekend.  AvidFly usually has some smoked fish to share.

I have had big plans every year but I usually end up just supervising and I don't have time to actually cook because I have all kinds of stuff to take care of.  There's a lot going on. and I'm lucky if I get to even fish during the roundup.  Which is fine by me, but there are a lot of things to do.  I'd like it if people could volunteer to do some specific things that need to get done during the roundup.  Angry Mongrel has stepped up to the plate for this, as has Tyler W. with his ninja-like knife skills.  They fillet fish and cook them.  I grind the fish fillets and mix the sucker balls.  I would like somebody to keep track of the food and arrange to have all the food ready for Saturday dinner, and I'd like to have somebody to accept all the prize donations and write down all the prizes so people would get credit for the super-awesome prizes they bring.

As all of you might have noticed, we still haven't done last year's roundup report.  I lost all of my pictures from the roundup when my house burned down, so I can't publish anything, but it's important to have a record of every roundup online.  I would like to appoint somebody the "Roundup Master" who could step up to the plate and publish the roundup report.  At least, I need a person to collect cool pictures of the roundup and put them together into a report.

This event has gotten bigger every year, and this year it is going to be HUGE, like last year or even bigger.

Tyler isn't going to be at the Roundup this year, so somebody else needs to take charge of cleaning fish.  I've done this in the past and it is very time-consuming.  Without Tyler, somebody with a big sharp knife needs to step up to the plate.

I need a "Foodmaster" to take charge of Saturday dinner,  I've been trying to do this for years and I am not good at it.

I'm hoping Angry Mongrel can repeat his performance as Frymaster.  Mongrel, you've been awesome for years.

I would like a "Prize Master" to accept prize donations, keep notes on the prizes for later publication online, and to award the prizes after the contest.  I've done all of this in the past and failed miserably.

I'll run the contest personally, with help from appointed Judges..

It would be nice to have somebody to be in charge of the Friday float.  I've taken charge of this in the past, but as you all know, it's been chaotic.

And - as I said before - somebody needs to take a lot of pictures and record the roundup for posterity.

I hope you guys can help.

I am sure Becky and I can

I am sure Becky and I can handle Pictures and a report without issue. She is normally taking awesome pics anyway.

I can help cook some Items Saturday, I would like to make the Glaxed redhorse on a grill. I know it will be awesome.
We also picked up a small gas coleman stove last week.

Here is an Idea. What if one of us brings a dry erase board (I may have one) on it we can write out info as needed and keep it up during the whole roundup.
We can put times and volunteers on it to help keep track.

Hopefully we will have our "home base" set up before te float, last year was confusing with those darn trout fishermen in our spot :D

I can also handle the prize table if you would like.

Foodmaster - I like the sound of that!

Feeding people:

I'd be happy to fill the volunteer position of foodmaster - I've prepped and organized multi-course meals for groups of 50+, and since my casting skills are borderline dangerous for anyone standing in my general vicinity, and doubting I'll catch many fish, it might be better for everyone if I stay behind the cookstoves and frying pans. :)

It is spring and the rhubarb has sprung ~ how do folks feel about rhubarb crisp?

(I'm bringing lots of baked goodies to share with everyone as good juju for fishing)

Feeding fish:

It is spring and the annelids have sprung ~ how do Root River fish feel about crawlers, leeches and waworms?

(What kind of bait should I bring for hopefully a wide variety of fish?)

Thanks for volunteering - you're hired!

You might want to make a post asking people what they are bringing closer to the event.

Nightcrawlers are the bait of choice on the Root.  I've never really tried anything else, though.  Except liver, which just gets attacked by stonecats at night.  It's always worth it to experiment, but be sure you have crawlers in the mix.

KPE
Better Later than never...

Plans seem to be coming into focus just recently and it appears that KPE (me, Kevin E.) will be planning to spend Friday-Sunday there and likely bringing some beef jerky as has been the tradition for I think 7 or 8 of the years on the roundup at least.    Depending on family and/or choir repsonsibilities may have to leave early Sunday but am looking forward to some time on the Root and sharing a few stories with those that fish for whatever bites.

late to the party

Man did I miss this string. Still not used to navigating the site. So here I go playing catchup.

Arriving Friday morning. Hoping to set up camp before getting on the water.

Add me to the cook list - I'll fry up a mess of potatoes with peppers, onions, etc.

I'd organize the float trip, but coming Friday morning will be difficult. Let's just all plan on leaving camp by noon and getting on the water as we can. We always pass each other as people at various places to fish, and this year there should be some great sand bar fishing.

Love the bagman dialogue. And ready to sing the blues.

And fully expecting to take the title this year, though it would be much sweeter to get the trophy from Tyler. In the unlikely event that I don't win, will Eric do the honors again, or do I get to hand it over since it was a tie last year.

Oh, and I did speak with Captain Rainbow yesterday. He is planning on coming and limiting out daily.

Oh Heidi

Oh Heidi
I have no experience with the suckerballs, or their creation.  Ill leave that to the masters.
I know Andy has the make up for some jalapeno suckerballs that are out of this world.

I will however (Assuming I find a few sutable fish) will grill some fillets of redhorse in a few different ways for people to sample. I wont be making enough for a main dish just a side dish.

I am excited to try the Scottish / Caribbean recipe of "Glaxing" where the grilled spiced fish is smothered in a fruity sauce on the grill.
"Glax Willie up a Grouper woman!" Was commonly heard on the docks of some of the early Scottish Colonies.
Its simply fantastic and melts in your mouth.

Who's prize boss?

I want to send a few things for the prize table since I can't come in person. Who should I send them to? Last year I sent some things to Andy but I may have been too late, so he might still have them to bring this year. Anyway, I'd like to donate a thing or two for this year.

In one post above Josh volunteered to be prize wrangler. Heidi's list says DT. Corey asked for someone other than him to do it, so I know I shouldn't send anything his way.

If I can find out today, I can mail tomorrow and it might actually get there on time.

If anyone knows, PM me please.

I'm bringing the usual

I'm bringing the usual "mystery prize."  Full of interesting items that the taker may or may not enjoy.  Choose at your own risk!  Hint: One of the items in this year's bag is often seen in pictures where I am holding fish.

I'll clean fish..... Fiddle

I'll clean fish..... Fiddle ought to lead the charge though.... that man can clean the sh*t out of a mess of suckers, like a fillet ninja, only faster and with a smile.

I'm shooting for thursday night, but friday am is plan B. depending on the car I wrangel, I might come with a canoe and an empty seat for the float.

I have a prize for the kid's table and will try to come up with some additional items for the big table.

If the sucker fishing isn't like normal, I might be doing some trout fishing to help fill up the pan for our pot luck. I know we are a week out with lots of severe weather on tap in the near future down that way. How has the fishing been to date? Water levels? Are they spawned out?

Prizes question

Having never been to the roundup, I don't know how prizes are handled. Is it just a big pile on a table, and people get to take what they want, with the champ choosing first, 2nd place choosing next, etc.? Or are there categories?

I just sent Jknuth a package with prize stuff I hope someone (or someones) will like. Redhorse lips stickers, Fish Rough! stickers & cards, redhorse ID cheatsheets and 2 prints: 1 tiger trout ( http://moxostoma.com/tiger-trout-poster/ ) and 1 redhorse ID ( http://moxostoma.com/redhorse-poster/ ).

I was thinking that the trout could go to whoever catches the most or biggest or most species of trout and the redhorse could go to the biggest or most or most species of redhorse. But if that's not how it's done, that's fine with me. I trust the powers that be. Plus, I didn't realize the Root only has 3 redhorse species.

Have fun! Wish I could be there and finally meet everyone.

Its normally done as a grab

Its normally done as a grab your prize in order of the fish numbers caught. (1st-2nd-3rd-4th....)
The issue last year was we had more prizes then contestants. this really says a lot for our group. We love to give.

In the past years we kept going through the contestants until the table was clear. I personally like this idea, because it simply means less leftover prizes that need to be stored for the year.

At the Scumfoot roundup I made a prize (Lord of the drum) for the largest drum caught.
Perhaps we could do this at the roundup for the trout and redhorse.
I made this poster for the roundup just the other day (it is being printed today)

I was thinking of handing it out to whoever gets the slam. If nobody gets it I was going to just put it on the table.
I think with more people organizing different parts of the roundup and taking all the pressure off of Corey and Andy we can do some more specialized events during the roundup if we like.

As far as the redhorse species in the Root. There are also Greaters and Blacks in some remote branches, but not anywhere near where we are in Lanesboro.

Dutch

slam

Josh I was thinking about something like that at work today, I read through all of round up reports and came up with this list:

Greater Redhorse
Silver Redhorse
Golden Redhorse
Shorthead Redhorse
Black Redhorse
White sucker
Northern hogsucker
Smallmouth bass
Rainbow trout
Brown trout,
Channel catfish
Shovelnose sturgeon
Mooneye
Carp
Quillback Carpsucker
Freshwater Drum

Was thinking what would be a Slam, Grand Slam, Mega Slam, King ot the Root slam
