Last open water fish of the year

Sunday, October 9, 2016
Size:
Three pounds, 20.5 inches

I've decided that this fish will be my last open water fish of the year. The weather -- dropping to 10 degrees below zero this week -- might make the decision easy for me but even if we get a late October warming spell this lake whitefish just seems the right one to call it a day. Not as spectacular as Andy's River but I'll take it. Besides, the lake whitefish have been dicks all year and finally on Sunday I didn't feel like a total schmuck fishing for them. The bite was good as was the cisco run bountiful. Got some meat in the freezer. All ready for the crap storm of November, followed -- hopefully -- by five months of awesome ice fishing bliss.

Here's another pic from the Sunday. The beads I tied for this trip were killer, I must say.

Sounds and looks like a great way to spend a Sunday! Man, squeezing in those last few hours of open water fishing must have felt great to slay a few whiteys for the freezer before the big freezer! I can't wait to catch a lake white fish of my own, when I see your bad ass reports I just drool every single time. Bad ass as usual man you might have to change your handle from Mike B. to Mike B.A.!

Ya just Can't catch um from the couch.

Nice thick one you have there!

And it looks all pretty, still. You must have not let it flop out of your hands seven times, while trying to get a photo. Unlike some people...

Did you run your boat down the rapids, at the spot we fished? (kidding)

Fishn sure is neat

Glad to see you got into some of those delicious whitefish.  Do the ciscos congregate in thta same area?  Love that 2nd photo, really cool shot.

They were delicious! If you look at the cliff behind me at the rapids Andy where the guy is standing by the shore, that's where we were dipping for ciscoes --about 200 in 20 minutes. The limit is 175 each. They were in there pretty thick. The whitefish were in the current seem at right.
