big hornyhead chub

Was fishing yesterday at a local spot and caught a nice hornyhead chub. It measured 10" and really didn't want me to hold it, that's why my hands are so dirty. It almost got back in the water at one point but I recaptured it. Never seen a chub go so crazy. It also had blue bands by it's gills, is that a breeding coloration? After that I caught another one, a bit smaller plus a carp and a white sucker. A ton of other minnows are at this spot, from large to tiny and I want to target them. With the chubs it seems like I always catch hornyheads wherever I'm at, and not other types of chubs. There must be some creek chubs around, any idea how to target them?

Results of some dip netting  last year... surprised at the number of species.

Nice bunch of micros! The large Chub looks to be a Creek to me. The blue and red are spawning colors.

Thanks a lot for the input fi

Thanks a lot for the input fishingdude, it does match traits of a creek chub. I just started getting into the micros last year, although chubs are pretty big to be called micros. I've probably been looking too closely at the spikes on top of the head. I gotta get after some of those smaller micros now.

No problem man, you should look into Tanago Hooks for the micro micros! They are the best.

micro id help

hey guys, was going through a couple micro pics from last June, hoping they might be something I can add as a lifer. My id

skills are pretty dull so I need your help. Didn't want to start a new topic. Caught these from a shallow creek that flowed into a medium size river in Iowa, funny thing was the river was loaded with stonecats below a small dam. Never seen so many stonecats, they were up in some flooded grass and one would instantly be hooked up as soon as you cast out. Anyways I hope these aren't common shiners, so I'm checking here first. Thanks.

Fish #2 from same spot. This one looks similar to a common shiner to me in regards to body shape and scales.

ok, got a couple more. May

ok, got a couple more. May as well throw em' on here. They're from around 2001 or so, as a result not good pic quality. But  I suppose it could still be done. I'd really like to find out what this one is. Fish #1: there were a bunch of these schooling in fairly swift water just below the surface and we got them to bite on small pieces of worm.

Pic size

Could you zoom in and crop a bit for the pic?

It will be tough without a clear pic. I tried but all i get are pixels

ugh

Having difficulty uploading pics to photobucket, so I'm using facebook but it won't let me copy the image address. It's weird cause it worked for that last pic. It would be sweet if that's a spot tail, been doing some research on shiners and could definitely use some more.
