What makes you think this is a spotted bass and not a largemouth?  Just dumb and curious...

Size of the scales on the head vs. the body.... scales on the head are tiny. Also the upper jaw doesn't go past the eye. That is a tricky one though. "Tongue" was rough as well, felt raspy.

found this on the Iowa dnr page: "The tail fin in young bass has a black vertical bar that separates the yellowish-orange fin base from a whitish fringe along the rear margin of the fin."

If I remember correctly, the mouth of juvenile largemouths doesn't necessarily pass the eye, so might not be useful for ID.
