Slammer Tip-up 2 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
i found a website online that advertise Slammer Tipups that set the hook when a fish takes the bait.
but instead of buying it i decided to make 1. turned out pretty good and works awesome. i'll let you guys know the results when i get out to use it. the rod is my 6 foot ugly stick. i have 20 lb braid on the reel (for pike). and i have a 3 foot measuring legth on the body. the holder is made from a basketball rack hook, an old bike peg, zip straps, and really strong gluee to hold the peg still

folds up pretty compactly

not to be a killjoy or anything, but I'm pretty sure that setup is not legal for use in MN. kind of like the automatic fisherman.
great ingenuity though. Keep tinkering away!

Nice work. Just don't use it in Minnesota. Unless you "like" jail.

Interesting to say the least. I don't know though, I think I'd want to hook the fish myself. Theres more satisfaction, for me anyway, of knowing the fish was caught because I showed them what they wanted, when they wanted it, and presented the way they wanted it. Thats why I don't fish with tip-ups. Besides that contraption looks like it could give you a serious welt on your face if you stood to close to it and the rod let loose. You'll shoot your eye out.(from the christmas story)

check section 4 of the MN state statute:
97C.325 RESTRICTIONS ON TAKING FISH.
(a) Except as specifically authorized, a person may not take fish with:
(1) explosives, chemicals, drugs, poisons, lime, medicated bait, fish berries, or other similar
substances;
(2) substances or devices that kill, stun, or affect the nervous system of fish;
(3) nets, traps, trot lines, or snares; or
(4) spring devices that impale, hook, or capture fish.
(b) If a person possesses a substance or device listed in paragraph (a) on waters, shores, or
islands, it is presumptive evidence that the person is in violation of this section.
(c) The commissioner may, by rule, allow the use of a nonmotorized device with a recoil
mechanism to take fish through the ice.
(d) To protect water quality or improve habitat for fish or wildlife, the commissioner may
prescribe restrictions on fishing seasons, limits, or methods on specific bodies of water.

Its amazing that States need to include that you can't use poison to catch fish in their bylaws........I'm fabbergasted......someone using poison to catch er I mean kill fish.

Did you ever see the 2nd Crocodile Dundee movie? The first 5 minutes, while entertaining in a "i'm at a movie" kind of way, is probably indicative of the mindset of many folks out there. For those of you who haven't seen it, the movie opens with Paul Hogan in a boat. He's fishing...with TNT...lol

Recoil Device? 2 Years, 7 Months ago

What about section C? What does a recoil device include? And wouldn't it have to set the hook? Honestly, I would be tempted to call a CO and ask them their interpretation of the law.

from what I've heard from other anglers encounters with this type of device and CO's, the answer is no, they say it's not legal.
The question I have is what the heck is a "fish berry"? (from line 1)

an online check revealed this:
fish berry, or Anamirta cocculus, or Anamirta paniculata, or cocculus (plant)
production of picrotoxin
...it has not yet been artificially produced. Some tribes of South American Indians taint their arrowtips with the curare poison. Picrotoxin, a poison present in the berries of the Southeast Asian fish berry, or cocculus, Anamirta cocculus (A. paniculata), can be used to stun fish, and the dried berries have some effect on internal parasites.

I heard that they are related to the notorius dingle berry. I think the next section of the regs goes into detail about the legality, application and limitations of fishing with dingle berries. As far as I know the COs hate dingle berries, but don't we all.

Maybe a "fish Berry" is what happens after a fish is hit with the spring loaded tip-up rod...lol

Mousetrap 2 Years, 7 Months ago
|

When I was a kid in Canada, folks made tip ups using mouse traps. The line was laid across the wire that catches the mouse, so that the wire moving the line gave is a jerk, but it wasn't attached to the trap. I don't remember any of the details, but a person could probably think about it a bit and come up with something.

I would like to see if there is any case law defining that rule. I would say the loading of the rod is hooking the fish. It is no different than a strike indicator. The spring is being used to raise the flag just like a tip-up. I have seen them used on Superior WI for near shore trout fishing. The guy had home made ones similar to yours. He said they worked great, but make sure the drag is smooth. I have wanted to make some to play with.
