Sturgeon, Lake
59 - 3/4"s

My runs down from Bemidji to fish the St. Croix are few and far between each winter with school, work, etc. playing against me, so I've done my best to make the most of each weekend that I do make it down. A full tank, 4 cans of Mtn. Dew, 1 pack of chocolate-dipped pretzels, and 4 and 1/2 hours later, I met a couple guys out on the water to do what most of us have set out for; some late-night sitting around and catching up, with the time broken up (hopefully) by the occasional Lake Sturgeon. Although my usual fishy evenings consist of the classic (what I call) mud-dogs, things took a turn for the better that night. I had been experimenting with different baits for awhile that evening and after one particular switch of cuisines, I felt the usual "thump", and with a bit too much caffeine in my veins, I energetically set into an anchor of a fish. Now I would consider myself a mildly avid St. Croix sturgeon fishermen, but no matter the skill level, the classic "popping" of the line from side to side of the hole will always give me a mild heart attack. This behavior was no surprise, but continued on for a few minutes and after some give and take, she finally gave way and my buddy was able to lift her up and out onto the water-puddled floor of our ice shack. I thought for sure she was going low 60"s as I exclaimed over the course of the fight to my pals. Yet to my surprise, she couldn't have been more shy of 60; 59 and 3/4 inch fish. Incredible. After a few pics, she gave a good kick and off she went back to the abyss. I know there has been alot of impressive fish beyond this one, but this marks my personal best lake sturg which makes it pretty special for me. Looking to break that 60 come summer!
