Within the last 30 days Ive caught 3 new lifers all of which were dream fish of mine..... a quillback, a black redhorse, and now a gizzard shad! The quillback I managed on my very first attempt targeting them in a new place, the redhorse also the first time i encountered them (but in one of my favorite spots where I had never seen them before), but with gizzard shad I have not been so lucky. I have easily spent more time targeting them than any other species. Today I went to a local dam and saw a large group inside the "trough" at the beginning of the tailwater. They were actively feeding on algae on the sides of the concrete about 30 feet below where I stood so I got rigged up with a small flake of earthworm and spent the next hour failing. I gave up and caught some sunfish and yellow bass for a while but I couldnt stop watching them feed all over the wall, several of them were around a foot in length. I went to my truck and got my ice rod, rigged it up with a size 18 fly hook and a sliver of Marukyu nori Jpz pellet which is like a soft algae jelly bait and no more than 5 minutes after i lowered my bait down the wall I felt a tug and there at the end of my line was a gizzard shad. I let out a triumphant "I cant believe that worked" laugh as I swung him over the raillings and immediately started berating him with insults like "Whats so funny now, you plankton eating [insert profanity]" Im glad it was too cold today for "normal" fishermen to be out, saved me having to explain why i was fishing for bait and the embarrassment of being as happy as I was to catch this fish.
