Regional grand slams

Over the winter, I was very, very bored and made up a task for myself one afternoon when I really had nothing better to be doing. My idea was the "Pennsylvania slam": a list of species common throughout PA and somewhat definitive of the region, and because of our American obsession with the number, I made it a lit of ten. It goes

Black Crappie

Bluegill

Brook Trout

Channel Catfish

Common Carp

Largemouth Bass

Rock Bass

Smallmouth Bass

Walleye

White sucker

It just came to mind because I tried to catch all of the species today. I expected it to be easy, as all of these fish are individually relatively easy, but I was surprised to find that I could spend quite a few hours on this and hardly even get halfway down the list.

Although it's probably just another extravagant excuse for goofing off, I'm going to have some fun with this.

Iowa Grand Slam

An Iowa 10 fish Grand Slam would consist of

1. Channel Catfish

2. Largemouth Bass

3. White Bass

4. Walleye

5. Common Carp

6. Bluegill

7. Black Crappie

8. Smallmouth Bass

9. Flathead Catfish

10. Brook Trout

This one is nearly impossible to complete in one day, but I've gotten 7 of the 10 before in a day.

Slams

Casey: did you make that up (I made that PA one up) or does Iowa actually have an official slam? The Pennsylvania one is very difficult and would be nearly impossible on flies, but if you really put the effort in, you could do it. I didn't make this thing to ridiculously hard because I'm a pretty darn mediocre fisherman and I probably wouldn't be able to do it if it was.

Unspoken Slam

It's not official, but isn't made up either. It's an unspoken slam among a lot of anglers throughout the central Iowa area. It's very difficult to complete in a single day, As the trout are only found in the northeast corner of the state.

Redhorse slam

Around here we look for redhorse slams quite a bit. Four species in a day is a slam, five is a grand slam and 6 is a super slam. I don't know of anyone attaining the super slam.
