<p>Josh and I headed out yesterday for a late summer fising trip on one of our favorite rivers. Both of us planned on targeting the large and numerous smallmouth bass and bluegill for a change, but as to be expected, other opportunities presented themselves and the redhorse were just too enticing to pass up. We had a blast, and a very nice and unexpected surprise - I scored my to-date personal best Golden Redhorse, a 20 inch monster!!!!</p>
<p>Started the day off right with a pretty sightfished Northern Hogsucker...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2001.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 531px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2002.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 864px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2003.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 735px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p>Next, we found a lot of redhorse milling around in a deep pool. They were all shy at first and my drifting skills had lapsed considerably since I haven't fished for like two months. Didn't take too long to get back into the groove, and coaxed this shorthead redhorse into biting...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2004.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 588px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p>Josh was catching a lot of bluegills for dinner, which in all honesty was both of our intentions when we started out today. He was much better at staying on target with that goal than I was. I saw some really large redhorse in the pool and couldn't help myself. Turns out my lack of self control paid off for once. There was a huge redhorse that I thought must be a river with dull fins or a skinny and long silver, because it was way too big to be what it actually ended up being. I drifted to it and waited, and to my surprise the big fish actually took the redworm! It is always so cool to watch a fish you've drifted to feed, and as it shook its head side to side I set the hook and the realization hit... MOTHER OF GOD, IS THAT A GOLDEN?!?!?!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2005.jpg" style="width: 768px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p> YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2006.jpg" style="width: 798px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2007.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 781px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />That, my friends, is a twenty-inch Golden Redhorse!!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2008.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 512px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2009.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 530px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2010.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 428px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2011.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 739px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />This is the biggest Golden Redhorse I've ever caught. Only an inch or two in length shorter than the monsters that have come out of the Root River over the last few years from Andy, SuperFrog, and Tyler! </p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2012.jpg" style="width: 755px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />There was much rejoicing, and then we sent it on its merry way...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2013.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 471px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2014.jpg" style="width: 808px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2015.jpg" style="width: 839px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />After seeing this come out of the water, Josh decided to get in on the action, too. Wasn't long before he has a very nice Golden in hand as well!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2016.jpg" style="width: 768px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />We began heading downstream. The smallmouth bass were biting, but no very large ones had been produced yet...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2017.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 496px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2018.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 700px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />When we got further downstream, we were treated to a sight. Though it is hard to tell their size from the photo, these are all juvenile redhorse, tiny little guys all swarming together on the sand!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2019.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 768px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2020.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 768px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2021.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 603px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />A little further on and Josh finally hooked into a NICE smallmouth bass that broke the surface and did some acrobatics!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2022.jpg" style="width: 775px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />And here's a GUIDE SHOT of the bass...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2023.jpg" style="width: 723px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p>Annnnd... SUPER GUIDE SHOT!!!!!!!</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2024.jpg" style="width: 622px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p>Josh really started lighting into the bass, and next came a really pretty fish even bigger than the #superguideshot fish...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2025.jpg" style="width: 689px; height: 1024px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2026.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 436px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2027.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 658px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" />Finally, it was time to go. We bid goodbye to the bass and headed back upriver...</p>
<p><img alt="" src="http://roughfish.com/sites/default/files/Sept%202%202016%2028.jpg" style="width: 1024px; height: 917px; border-width: 5px; border-style: solid; margin: 5px;" /></p>
<p>A great day - beautiful weather, clear water, hilarious conversations and lots of awesome fish. Good to be back out there again after a crazy summer. Til next time! </p>
Looks like a great day of fishing - inspires me to get out there on the river! Beautiful pics - especially of the jeuvi RH. And big congrats on the PB golden RH! Well done!
Looks like a great day to me
Eli
What a big golden! I like the hog too, plus nice shots of the redhorse school. I can understand how easy it is to be distracted by all those fish.
"There's always a bigger fish"
Man, sounds like a good day on the river. Multi-species fishing at its finest, love those smallies and rehdorse in a healthy stream.
Carpy Diem!
Nice bronzebacks. Gotta love the coloration on those hogs.
